Mars Square Pluto : Power Grab

The last week of June and the first week of July could be a telling time on the World Stage.  It could be a time when power struggles are more prominent and the gloves come off.  There is also the potential for transformation to be activated - amongst many, many other possibilities.  The transit setting the stage for this type of activity is Mars in Aries Square to Pluto in Capricorn.

Before further discussion about Mars Square Pluto : let’s set the stage with a deeper look at what Pluto represents in the US at this time.

US Pluto Return

The Pluto Return of the United States is currently in full swing. This is such a big transit that I truly need to write an entire article on it to give it justice.  The Cliff Note version of the transit is that Pluto takes about 245 years to make its way all the way around the Zodiac.  Thus, transiting Pluto is now meeting up with the Pluto at 27° Capricorn 33’ in the US Chart.

Outer Planet transits are slow moving and astrologers generally give about a 10° orb on either side of the exact conjunction.  What that means is that the US Pluto Return began around 2017.

I’m sure that we can all recall the distinct division that ramped up around that 2017 (regardless of your political affiliation).  So, essentially, that same flavor of division has been ramping up and now we see for certain that there is no going back to the United States that we once knew (for better or for worse).

The initial exact conjunction between transiting Pluto and Pluto in the chart of the US Constitution on July 4, 1776 was on February 20, 2022. Most outer planet transits consist of 3 exact conjunctions.  So, July 11, 2022 and December 28, 2022 will be the last two.  Then we will begin experiencing Pluto’s ingress into Aquarius - which is a whole different story!

As many of you know, Pluto transits aren’t light and go-with-the-flow times.  Pluto transits are intense and relentlessly require us to come to terms with that which lies in the shadows of the unconscious - in this case the Collective Unconscious.  The misuse of power, violence, taboos, subversion and the like are all on the table for transformation and evolution.

The shadows of the US are currently in full view and ripe for transformation.  The gaping hole created by the immense division has allowed for the most vulnerable and resented parts of our country to be exposed.  They must now be reconciled.

In a personal consult regarding a Pluto transit I would usually encourage the individual to sit in the muck with the vulnerability and see what it needs, that is where the real transformation can take place.  But, how do we do that as a nation?  How do we transform the muck into riches (as Pluto promises) without unnecessary destruction?  While this may be heavy material to digest, I encourage you to meditate on this to the best of your ability.

Pluto transits are a great time to work with a therapist, or other kinds of healers or helpers, because the material that is currently being unearthed can be challenging to work through on your own.  If you know a therapist or are one yourself, you know that therapist’s practices are currently thriving (for good reason).  Heaviness, darkness and rage is polluting the atmosphere in more ways than one.  If you feel that you are struggling know that you are not alone and that it is more than okay to reach out for help.

There are several other astrological indicators pointing to the upheaval of the tried-and-true in the US : such as the Eclipses taking place along the Taurus/Scorpio axis, the ongoing Saturn Square Uranus as well as the reverberations of the January 2020 Saturn-Pluto Conjunction and the December 2020 Jupiter-Saturn Conjunction.  (Many of these transits have been discussed in previous articles)

Mars Square Pluto

The Mars Square Pluto (27° 46’) transit will perfect on July 1, 2022 at 8:13pm MDT.  There are several reasons why this is a noteworthy transit.  First of all, Mars is in its own sign of Aries, where its force is clear and potent.  Secondly, this is the last time that an Aries Mars will be squaring Pluto in Capricorn.  The first square that the most recent Pluto in Capricorn received from Mars in Aries was on April 26, 2009.  And lastly, this is the only time that Pluto has formed a hard aspect with Mars at 27° Capricorn (the Pluto Return point of the US chart).  To further support the potency of this transit is that the next exact conjunction of transiting Pluto to the Pluto of the US Chart is on July 11, 2022 (several days after this square).

What this means is that the Aries high-voltage Mars is challenging the structural and hierarchical churning that Pluto has been relentlessly undertaking for over a decade.  There could be angry people or organizations who are aggressive towards the unearthing that has taken place.  Action could be taken to complete the transformation at hand, because an Aries Mars requires immediate action.

We could see the “final nail” put in the coffin of who the United States once was - if that is even possible.  Absolutely, the activity that came out of the Supreme Court recently is a reflection of this transit.  And maybe what we see as the transit perfects is more ramped up reaction to the overturning of Roe v Wade.

It’s hard to say how this will play out on the world stage, but one thing for sure is that you will know it when you see it.

On a personal level, this is a great time for self-empowerment.  Take stock of where you are not standing strong enough in your power.  Remember that power is strong but yielding.  We can be our own worst enemies - allow yourself to be the potent force that you naturally are.  It is your birth rite.

If you start to feel a power struggle coming on (either within yourself or with others), take a break and a breath.  It may not be worth engaging in.  Because a square indicates a struggle or a need for negotiation to take place, be aware that this pull for power is in the collective.  Each of us is as likely to become trapped in someone else’s power negotiation as we are to pull others into our own.

That said, if you need to take initiative on a situation that seems overwhelming or daunting, this could be a great time to jump in and let the transits take the wheel for a bit.

Conclusion

During this time of continued stress and hardship, I hope that you are taking the time to nurture yourself.  I know that I need that reminder too, as the long road thus far has taken quite a toll on both my physical and mental health.  Reach out for help from your support system, get out into nature, move your body in nourishing ways, eat living food from the organic earth.  It doesn’t have to be a lot all the time, just little bits of love and care for yourself every day will make a big difference.
