A Gentle Approach : Children’s Natal Charts

QuirkyKids-Constellation.png

Note : I write this from the perspective of a mother of three little boys.  It is also applicable to those who work with children or are simply interested in nurturing the pathway of our future.

Looking at a child’s Natal Chart requires a gentle approach.  Every observation of the birth chart’s symbology requires a brief, open-ended interpretation.  Each characteristic should be given ample room to breathe, grow and uniquely become whatever the child’s free-will negotiates with fate.  Our children are the promise of the future, we should leave the path of the Future as wide-open as possible for them.

Looking at a child’s Natal Chart can give you solid guidelines regarding your child’s personality traits, what they need to support their optimal growth, what their internal struggles may be and how to best address them.  If your child is having any challenges at school, their Natal Chart can point to how they learn best, where they may struggle and what resources they may need along the way.

When looking at a child’s Natal Chart, there are a few basic elements that can give you a lot of important information about how to best nurture them, interact with them and provide them the most enriching environment to grow up within.  In addition, it is important to have a good understanding of your own chart so that you know how you, as the parent, is helping or hindering your little one’s innate path.

The Basic Elements

The basic elements that we look at in a child’s Natal Chart usually include the following : Ascendent / Ascendent Ruler, Sun, Moon and Mercury.  For each of these elements, a gentle interpretation approach would take a look at each of these Planet’s Sign placements, House placements and any important aspects that they are involved within.  Below is a listing of each of the chart elements, what they are and why they are important :

  • Ascendent / Ascendent Ruler :

    • What : The lens through which each individual sees the world. How they meet the world, and how they interpret the world to themselves. What is the “hue” that they see the world through? How does this effect the rest of their chart placements?

    • Why : This is the most personal and arguably important placement in anyones chart. While the other placements are also important, the Ascendent / Ascendent Ruler color and influence the entire chart. Understanding this placement can give you a more solid understanding of WHO your child is and what their basic motivations are.

  • Sun :

    • What : The individual’s will, how they shine, why they want to shine in that way, what is the dream or goal that drives them above all other things?

    • Why : Understanding your child’s most driving force within them gives you the insight to provide an environment, stimulation and opportunities to light that fire within them even more. If their life-goals greatly differ from our own, we may be more likely to support their unique drives if we understand that it’s all part of their beautiful, cosmic design.

  • Moon :

    • What : What the individual finds nurturing, the individual’s experience of home, mother, and their emotional self. When they are run down, what do they need in order to refill themselves?

    • Why : Looking at your child’s Moon Sign is one of the most important placements for mothers to understand, and you probably know it pretty well all ready. If you are a mother, you have been nurturing, emotionally managing, feeding and holding your child and, thus have been embodying the Moon for your child. Understanding your child’s Moon placement can provide you with deeper insight and likely confirmation of the relationship that you innately have with your child. And if your child has emotional patterns that are challenging for you to understand, this can be a great guide to understand where they are coming from internally. And you can be a greater advocate for their emotional health and wellness.

  • Mercury :

    • What : How your child communicates, takes in information and disperses information. How their mind works, how they learn and what they may be drawn towards learning. How their fine motor-skills work.

    • Why : Understanding how your child communicates can be a great addition to your general understanding of how they feel (the Moon). This can also be a great tool in helping to navigate their way through school, especially if they have any challenges (as many children do).

Once you have a good grasp on these basic elements in your child’s Natal Chart, you will likely have a better idea of how to support your child as an individual with their own unique reason d’être, instead of inadvertently projecting your own chart onto them.  Greater self understanding also helps, so make sure that you have a pretty solid understanding of your own Cosmic Energetics (as described by your Natal Chart) before you delve into your child’s.

This is your Child’s Dance

I have to be honest, looking at any Natal Chart (especially our child’s) can be like opening a can of worms. And you have to be ready to approach it with an open mind. Looking at your child’s Natal Chart makes you realize that we REALLY do not have the ultimate last word (or even the first word) on how our child’s life will or will not turn out.  It is terrifying that, as a parent, we have so.little.control.

Each of our children will have challenging chart placements.  And each of our children will have challenges in their lives.  This is one big reason why it is important to hold the chart interpretation gently and lightly.  We don’t know how the chart will actually play out for our children.  Just like we had no idea how our chart was playing out when we were children (or even now).  But… you have likely always had an instinctive idea of your relationship with the “divine plan” and you have danced that dance your entire life.  This is your child’s dance.  Let them dance it, we are just here to support it.

By understanding the basic placements in your child’s Natal Chart, you can support their dance in whatever way they came to this lifetime to do it.  And you can be a better dance partner by understanding how your chart dynamics interact.

Closing Words

Hold your perfect bundles of love close every day.  Help them to make their glow brighter and to find the teacher within their struggles.  Being the “perfect” parent may be unreachable, but having an understanding of our child’s Cosmic Blueprint can give us some tips and clarifications that make all the difference.
